ISO 3166-1 Country Code List
What Are ISO 3166-1 Country Codes?
ISO 3166-1 country codes are standardized codes used to identify countries, dependencies, and other areas of particular geopolitical interest. The standard assigns each entry three different codes: a two-letter alpha-2 code such as US for the United States, a three-letter alpha-3 code such as USA, and a three-digit numeric code such as 840.
These codes are used in international databases, software, APIs, and localization systems that need a consistent way to identify countries and regions. In localization, ISO 3166-1 codes are often used alongside language codes to distinguish regional language variants. For example, en-US identifies English for the United States, while en-GB identifies English for the United Kingdom. That regional distinction can affect spelling, terminology, date and number formats, currencies, units, and other locale-specific content.
The table below lists all 249 currently assigned ISO 3166-1 country and territory codes, including alpha-2, alpha-3, and numeric formats.

Why ISO 3166-1 Country Codes Matter for Localization
Localization is usually more specific than translating content from one language to another. The same language can be used differently across countries and regions, and software often needs a standardized way to identify which regional version is intended. ISO 3166-1 country codes provide that geographic identifier.
A language code by itself can identify English, French, Portuguese, or Spanish, but it does not necessarily identify the regional form of that language. Adding a region can make the target locale more precise:
| Locale | Meaning |
|---|---|
en-US | English for the United States |
en-GB | English for the United Kingdom |
fr-FR | French for France |
fr-CA | French for Canada |
pt-BR | Portuguese for Brazil |
pt-PT | Portuguese for Portugal |
es-ES | Spanish for Spain |
es-MX | Spanish for Mexico |
Those distinctions can matter when localized content uses different spelling, vocabulary, terminology, date and number conventions, currency formats, units, or market-specific content. Country codes also give localization systems a consistent identifier that can be passed between tools. Translation management systems, content management systems, APIs, databases, analytics platforms, and other software can use standardized locale or region identifiers instead of relying on country names that may be written differently across systems.
Country Codes Help Define the Target Locale
A localization team may support several variants of the same language. For example, a company could maintain separate English content for the United States and United Kingdom or separate Portuguese content for Brazil and Portugal. Using standardized identifiers helps keep those targets distinct throughout the workflow.
A localization workflow might use region information to:
- define source and target locales
- route content to the correct translators or reviewers
- organize translation memories and terminology resources
- label localized files or content variants
- map languages and regions between connected systems
- apply market-specific content rules
- report performance by locale or country
- keep regional versions from being mixed together
The exact implementation varies by platform, but standardized identifiers make it easier for different systems to refer to the same region consistently.
A Country Code Is Not a Language Code
ISO 3166-1 identifies countries and territories. It does not identify languages. That distinction matters in localization because a country can have multiple languages, and the same language can be used across many countries.
CAidentifies Canada, not Canadian English or Canadian French.CHidentifies Switzerland, where German, French, Italian, and Romansh are used.ESidentifies Spain, while Spanish is also used across many countries in the Americas.USidentifies the United States, where localized content may be provided in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, and many other languages.
Localization systems therefore commonly combine language and region information when a regional distinction is useful.
ISO 3166-1 Alpha-2, Alpha-3, and Numeric Codes
Every ISO 3166-1 entry has three code formats.
ISO 3166-1 Alpha-2 Codes
Alpha-2 codes contain two letters, such as US for the United States, GB for the United Kingdom, IN for India, DE for Germany, and MX for Mexico. Alpha-2 codes are the format most often used when a short country or region identifier is needed. They are especially relevant to localization because two-letter region subtags appear in many language and locale identifiers.
ISO 3166-1 Alpha-3 Codes
Alpha-3 codes contain three letters and are usually easier for people to associate with the country name. Examples include USA for the United States, GBR for the United Kingdom, IND for India, DEU for Germany, and MEX for Mexico. Alpha-3 codes can be useful in datasets, reporting, or other systems where a recognizable three-letter country identifier is preferred.
ISO 3166-1 Numeric Codes
ISO 3166-1 also includes three-digit numeric codes, such as 840 for the United States, 826 for the United Kingdom, 356 for India, 276 for Germany, and 484 for Mexico. The numeric codes correspond to the United Nations M49 codes. A numeric identifier can be useful when systems need a language-independent way to represent a country or territory.
ISO 3166-1 and Locale Codes
ISO 3166-1 codes are often seen inside locale and language tags, but the complete locale identifier is not itself an ISO 3166 code. For example, in fr-CA, fr identifies French and CA identifies Canada. Together, fr-CA identifies French in a Canadian regional context.
Language tags used on the web follow BCP 47. BCP 47 draws on standards including ISO 639 for language subtags and ISO 3166-1 for many region subtags. A region should be included when it adds information that matters for the intended content or software behavior. Not every language tag needs a country code.
ISO 3166-1 vs. ISO 639 Language Codes
ISO 3166 and ISO 639 solve different identification problems. ISO 3166-1 identifies countries and territories, while the ISO 639-1 language code standard identifies commonly used languages with two-letter codes.
| Standard | Identifies | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| ISO 3166-1 | Countries and territories | US, GB, CA, MX |
| ISO 639-1 | Languages | en, fr, es, de |
The two standards are frequently used together in localization. For example, en-US combines English with the United States, en-GB combines English with the United Kingdom, fr-CA combines French with Canada, and pt-BR combines Portuguese with Brazil.
For language identifiers, see Boostlingo's complete ISO 639-1, ISO 639-2, ISO 639-3, and ISO 639-5 code resources.
How Country Codes Support Localization Workflows
Standardized country codes become especially useful when localized content moves across multiple systems.
Translation Management Systems
A translation management system may use locale identifiers to separate translation jobs, translation memories, terminology, or workflows for different regional variants. For example, content intended for es-ES may need different terminology or review requirements from content intended for es-MX.
Content Management Systems
Websites and applications can use locale identifiers to associate content with the correct language and regional version. This helps keep localized pages, navigation, metadata, and market-specific content aligned with the intended audience.
APIs and System Integrations
Localization workflows often connect several platforms. Standardized language and region identifiers reduce ambiguity when locale data passes between a CMS, translation platform, application, database, or analytics system.
Formatting and Locale-Aware Software
Locale-aware software can use regional information when selecting conventions for dates, numbers, currencies, measurement systems, and other culturally dependent formatting. The country code does not define all of these rules by itself. Instead, the region is one part of the locale information that software can use to select the appropriate conventions.
Localization QA
Clear locale identifiers also make quality assurance easier. A reviewer can confirm that content intended for one market has not been mixed with another regional variant of the same language. For example, a workflow labeled simply en may be ambiguous if both U.S. and U.K. English are supported. Distinguishing en-US from en-GB makes the intended target explicit.
How ISO 3166 Is Organized
ISO 3166 is divided into three parts:
- ISO 3166-1 covers codes for current countries, dependencies, and other areas of particular geopolitical interest.
- ISO 3166-2 covers subdivisions such as states, provinces, regions, and similar administrative areas.
- ISO 3166-3 covers codes for country names that have been removed from ISO 3166-1.
The table on this page covers ISO 3166-1. The current published edition is ISO 3166-1:2020, which ISO reviewed and confirmed in 2025.
How Many ISO 3166-1 Country Codes Are There?
There are 249 currently assigned ISO 3166-1 entries. That number is higher than the number of sovereign states because ISO 3166-1 also assigns codes to certain dependencies and other areas of particular geopolitical interest. Examples include Puerto Rico, Guam, Greenland, Hong Kong, and Antarctica.
This is why ISO 3166-1 is best understood as a list of coded countries and territories rather than simply a list of independent countries.
How Are ISO 3166-1 Codes Assigned?
The ISO 3166 Maintenance Agency maintains the alphabetic codes, with country names based on United Nations sources. Numeric codes correspond to the United Nations M49 system.
Codes can change when a country changes its name or political status. For localization teams and software developers, that makes it important to use a current reference rather than an old static country list. For example, AN was formerly used for the Netherlands Antilles. That entry was deleted after the territory was dissolved. Current ISO 3166-1 entries include BQ for Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba, CW for Curaçao, and SX for Sint Maarten (Dutch part).
Related Language Code Resources
Country codes are often used alongside language codes in localization. These Boostlingo resources cover the main ISO 639 code sets:
- ISO 639-1 language codes: two-letter identifiers for commonly used languages.
- ISO 639-2 language codes: three-letter codes used in library, archival, and other systems.
- ISO 639-3 language codes: a broader registry covering documented individual languages.
- ISO 639-5 language family codes: codes for language families and groups.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why Are ISO 3166-1 Codes Used in Localization?
ISO 3166-1 codes give localization systems a standardized way to identify countries and regions. They can be combined with language identifiers to distinguish regional language variants, such as en-US and en-GB, and help keep locale data consistent across translation, content, software, and reporting systems.
Is an ISO Country Code the Same as a Locale Code?
No. An ISO 3166-1 code identifies a country or territory. A locale or language tag can contain a language, region, script, and other information. For example, CA is the country code for Canada, while fr-CA identifies French in a Canadian regional context.
