Call Center FAQs
What is a certified interpreter? What does it mean to be one?
A certified interpreter is a language professional who has passed a valid and reliable certification exam administered by an accredited entity. Certified interpreters demonstrate the ability to interpret effectively, have proven proficiency in the languages they speak, and have a thorough understanding of specific terminologies in their areas of specialization.
For example, a certified medical interpreter is trained to understand and interpret complex medical processes to ensure proper communication between a doctor and a patient. As such, doctors acquiring certified medical interpretation services can communicate effectively across all stages of treatment leading to improved patient outcomes.
In the United States, there is limited certification of medical and court interpreters. Because interpreters provide services in hundreds of languages, formal certification is not available to all language pairs. But just because an interpreter can’t become fully certified doesn’t mean they aren’t fully qualified. For example, courts often require interpreters to be certified, but for language pairs where that is not possible, interpreters prove they have achieved the same professional level as certified interpreters through proof of language proficiency, training and education, experience, and evaluation.
Boostlingo’s specialized interpreters all meet the same, rigorous professional requirements, whether certified or not.
What is the role of an interpreter?
Interpreters make it possible for individuals who speak different languages to communicate with each other. Interpreters are trained to accurately convey the meaning of what is said in spoken and sign languages. They ensure everyone’s ability to be in control of their communication.
What are the different types of interpretation services?
Interpretation services can be classified into two main types:
- Spoken Language Interpreting – The interpreter converts spoken language from one language to another.
- Sign Language Interpreting – The interpreter may convert messages between two different sign languages or convert spoken language into sign language and vice-versa.
Moreover, it’s important to know that interpretation is delivered through the use of different interpreting techniques, modes, and different modalities.
Interpreters use different interpreting techniques, called modes:
- Consecutive – The interpreter listens to what the speaker says and conveys the message in another language after the speaker has paused. Consecutive is used in many settings, such as medical consultations, business-related interactions, meetings, and legal interactions.
- Simultaneous – The interpreter interprets the message of the speaker, speaking at the same time as the speaker. It is used for meetings and events with multilingual participants, as well as for court proceedings and many kinds of group sessions.
- Sight Translation -The interpreter analyzes written text and converts it into spoken language. This technique requires the reader to read aloud the text in real time and is especially useful for legal proceedings and other situations where documents need to be understood immediately.
Interpreting services are delivered through different modalities:
- Onsite Interpreting – Interpretation by a language professional who is physically present with the other participants.
- Video Remote Interpreting (VRI) – Interpretation is delivered through a video-conferencing platform and is available either on-demand or as a pre-scheduled service.
- Over the Phone Interpreting – Interpretation delivered over the phone or as audio-only using a connected computer or tablet.
What’s the difference between certified translation and certified interpretation services?
Many people think that translation and interpretation are the same when they are not. They are related, but separate professions. Both have the same purpose of overcoming linguistic barriers, but translation focuses on written text while interpreting facilitates communication for spoken and sign languages in real time. When you are a certified or qualified translator or interpreter, you have either passed an accredited exam process or shown proof of the required professional skill set to work in translation or interpretation.
Can you be both a translator and interpreter?
Generally, yes. However, as noted, translation and interpreting are separate professions that require distinct training and certifications. Many language professionals do obtain the training to provide both translation and interpretation.
Just because someone is a certified translator does not necessarily mean he is a certified interpreter. Moreover, certified interpreters have varying fields of specialization. An individual may be a certified medical interpreter but may not be qualified to interpret legal proceedings unless they have also gone through the process to become a certified legal interpreter.
